Since I am the author of my story I know the story. But I were illustrating another authors work I would read the story and mark important scenes that need special attention. I draw a small series of boxs that represent the pages of my story. My story will have 32 pages which is one of the page lengths used for children's picture books. Below is an example of how I would get started. Each square is a page or two pages togather. The three to four pages are front matter used to give the publishers name, copyright information, dedications, etc. Start on page four or five. Think about how you would layout the pages and mark the manuscript to correspond to your layout. You may find that there is too manythings happening for a one page illustrations or that there isn't enough visual material. This is good for authors or illustrators to use.

| The next step is to take each page and look at it for tonal and spacial composition. Each image must work on many different levels. The text might not tell what time of day, where the action is taking place, all the charactors in the action. The illustrator will have add these elements and they will start with the first set of sketches for each page. Here is also the place where you will reconsider whether the art work is only page, a double spread, half a page , and so forth. |
